After days of thorough search and detailed investigation, men of the Nigeria Police Force have finally arrested a 35-year-old lumber man for forcefully having sexual intercourse with a 12-year-old orphan who is still in Primary School in Ekiti State.
The girl (name withheld) was admitted at the General Hospital, Ijan Ekiti, where...
she received treatment for the several injuries she sustained in her private part as a result of the violent act. Explaining to journalists how she was raped and abandoned, the orphan who presently lives with her grandmother, said she went to a nearby well to fetch water after school when she was accosted by the rapist who asked her to help him fetch a bucket of water to his apartment.
She disclosed that she declined, having realized that he was a stranger in the area and that her grandmother would feel offended if she ran errand for somebody that was not well known to the people. Adding that “When he realized that I was not ready to help him, he pounced on me, carried me on his shoulder-high and took me to an uncompleted portion of the building where he lives, tore my cloth and had sex with me.”
The orphan girl disclosed that the rapist stuffed her mouth with a rag to prevent her from crying while having sex with her, so that the people in the neighbourhood would not be aware of what was happening.
She said: “After the sex, I was bleeding profusely, he then gave me N100 to buy drugs and he fled. When I could not rise up from that spot where he raped me, the younger brother to the suspect’s landlord, Mr. Abdul Abu, saw me and raised alarm.”
The Special Assistant to the Governor on Legal Matters, Olanrewaju Kunle disclosed that three persons had been arrested before the culprit confessed to the police that he committed the offence. Mr. Kunle said the Ekiti State Government would tackle the matter with all seriousness, because it is a contravention of the Child Rights Act and the Gender-based Violence Prohibition Law passed by the state government.
On his part, the state Police PRO said investigations are still ongoing on the matter and that the suspect would be charged to court soon.
